Are you willing to bring an adult the gift of literacy?

Volunteer Advisors:

Arlington Reads advisors volunteering through the Arlington Public Library System will act as an advocate for the student. Advisors initially meet with the adult learner to set goals, create and monitor a case file, and to ensure that the student is assigned to the program that best fits his/her needs. In addition, the advisor will inform the student about supplementary materials, programs and upcoming events that may be available through the library or elsewhere in the community that may be of interest to the student.

Volunteer Tutors:

Arlington Reads tutors volunteering through the Arlington Public Library System provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to adults who need to improve their English reading and writing skills. We need new tutors to help meet the needs of the increasing numbers of students requesting these services.

How to Get Started?

  1. Enroll in a 1-hour prospective volunteer information session. This session will introduce you to the Arlington Reads program and give you enough information to decide if you want to take the next step toward becoming a literacy volunteer advisor or tutor.
  2. If you decide that becoming an adult literacy advisor or tutor is for you, register for an advisor and tutor training workshop. This workshop is required for all Arlington Reads volunteers. (Let us know if you have attended a tutor training workshop from another agency or have literacy tutoring experience.)
